With son, Phillip, Abe began serving the downtown Raleigh community with quality merchandise at the most reasonable prices. Great Uncle Phillip Horwitz moved to Raleigh from Baltimore to start Raleigh Loan on Wilmington Street. Five years later, Alan’s grandfather Abe Horwitz came to Raleigh to help. Phillip, the current owner, came of age working alongside his father Abe before eventually taking over.”

Both businesses were consolidated, the selection of merchandise expanded, and soon Reliable Loan & Jewelry was the place to go in the Triangle for diamonds, estate jewelry, and all sorts of other items.”

New Opportunities
The Reliable Jewelry and Loan shop, which has been a pawn shop in Raleigh for over a half-century, recently moved from its old location, which is seen here being torn down to make room for a new project, to a more upscale location down the street in downtown Raleigh.
